History of the Video Console Gaming Systems Through Seven Generations

A video gaming system is an interactive electronic device which is used for playing video games on a personal computer.

The honor of being the first video console game lies with the Magnavox Odyssey which was invented by Ralph H. Baer in 1972. This game met with only moderate success and was soon succeeded in popularity by ‘Pong’ which was an arcade game which was released by Atari. Therefore, these two games along with their close successors like Odyssey 100, Odyssey 200, Smash and Sears which formed the first generation of video console gaming systems in the world. This was followed by the second generation games in 1976 and these were equipped with the Video Entertainment System (VES) which comprised of cartridges along with ROM to store instructions.

The third generation of the video console gaming systems emerged after a long hiatus in 1983 after having witnessed two major crashes. This generation marked the advent of the Japanese company Nintendo into the market in form of NES, Nintendo entertainment system in 1985 as well as its hit game the Super Mario Bros. The fourth generation did not witness the release of any particular game but saw an improvement in the storage capacity as well as technology with regards to the video console games. The fifth generation video console games were the Atari Jaguar, 3DO, the Nintendo 64, PlayStation by Sony as well as the Sega Saturn.

The sixth generation was probably the most revolutionary generation with regards to the video console gaming industry as it was during this generation that the DVDs were used for storage for the first time in the game media. It was also during this generation that three of the most popular video console games were released namely PS2 by Sony, Xbox by Microsoft and GameCube by Nintendo. These video console games were further advanced in the current generation namely the seventh generation but have still retained their popularity as the most sought-after gaming consoles in the world. The prominent gaming consoles in the seventh, which also happens to be the latest, generation are the PS3 by Sony, the Xbox 360 by Microsoft and the Wii by Nintendo.

Is The Popularity of Console Games Likely to Fade Away?

Over the last few years, there has been a stalled growth in console games with the highest console games revenues having been recorded in 2009. In 2009, the total sales of console games were a staggering $13,626 million compared to $8,910 million PC games sales the same year. However, since 2009, console games began decreasing in sales while PC games increased. Currently, consoles are still popular and with the introduction of the R4 ds cards, these devices have been converted into multimedia gadgets.

One of the reasons why consoles have performed well in the past is because they are portable. People carry with them these devices when they move from one place to another. Compared to a PC or laptop, consoles are far much lighter and users have enjoyed playing games in whichever place they are whether in offices, travelling or on a vacation.

In the first quarter of 2011, the sales growth of these game devices reached a low of $8,009 million and in this same period, PC games grew to $11,575 million. The abrupt shift from console to PC games has been associated with the processing speed of these portable devices. Consoles have been cited to have less sufficient processing capacity to enable high definition- HD graphic picture, which users want to view when they play their games.

The game players want to get the most satisfying experience when they are playing games from their consoles. However, this has partly been impaired because these devices have been designed with less processing speed. The higher the processing power of the device, the better it is able to display the high definition graphics and pictures.

This is one area where consoles have been overwhelmed by the PC, since personal computers have been designed with much higher processing capacity. Nonetheless, there seems to be a “tug of war” between these portable game devices and the PCs because manufacturers of consoles have embarked on major technological advancements.

Today, with your console devices, you can use it as a multimedia streaming gadget. Some of these devices have been designed with inbuilt cameras, which can take 3D photos. Users are no longer limited to using their handheld game devices for sole purpose of playing games. You can use the gadgets to make Skype calls meaning that business people and individuals who would like to communicate via Skype can do so conveniently.

In addition, users can also watch movies and enjoy their favorite online TV shows. Since the devices are internet enabled, they can be used for email communication and any online applications such as browsing through websites. With such qualities, it is becoming clear that consoles have advanced significantly and can now compete effectively with PC devices not only in games playing but also in other multimedia functions and internet access.

Because consoles devices do not have a lot of storage memory capacity, a user can use r4 card to store his or her content such as music, movies and other downloadable materials. When the card is installed in a console, it ensures that the handheld device is able to accommodate as much content as possible. This enhances the user experience and could see many people continue using console game playing devices.

What Is the Future of Console Games?

There is an increasing trend on PC games when compared to consoles games and this has prompted console device manufacturers and game developers to strategically seek for new innovations in the gadgets. There have been improvements on these handheld devices in the past such as internet connectivity, Bluetooth features as well as incorporation of inbuilt cameras. With the introduction of storage memory enhancement cards such as the R4i cards, this has seen an additional feature of the devices, which still makes them a choice for many people.

According to a report released by PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA), it showed that PC games market recorded a growth of 15% percent in 2011 with sales reaching $18.6 billion. This shows that PC games are posing a challenge to console games. There has been an increase in the number of people who own console games from 50% to 56% in US.

The 7th generation consoles have put a new picture to these gadgets, which have previously been abandoned in preference to PC games. The latest generation of consoles include PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, all of which have advanced features. And as the DFC Intelligence forecasts show that the global market for video games is expected to grow to $82 billion by the year 2017 up from $67 billion in 2012, it is however, skeptical to games analysts on the future of consoles.

The online games industry has seen a stalled to declining trend in sales and this has partly been contributed to decrease in use of consoles. In a statement by DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole, he has cited that the new generation of console systems like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft will assist in repairing the uncertain future of console segment of games.

However, this change may not be seen immediately and it might take a couple of years before these handheld devices can gain remarkable position in the market to outweigh PC games. Console users are slowly gaining interests with the devices and this has seen a slight improvement in the number of console games sold in 2012.

Some of the features which have added value to the handheld game devices are such as Bluetooth technology, Skype live communication and call attributes as well as advanced music player and photo viewers. Previously, console manufacturers thought that they had beaten the PC games but this has taken a different shift in the recent years. When coupled with smartphones, tablets and internet enabled phones, the population of consumers who play online games is now being distributed among these devices.

Since the high definition pictures and graphics require high memory capacity to be streamed clearly, users of console devices can use the r4 dsi cards to increase the memory and storage capacity of their devices. This means that the content they download from the internet whether games, music, movies or TV episodes, can be stored in the cards.

In essence, although there has been a decrease in revenues earned from console games, and which has caused a lot of concern on the dwindling popularity of consoles, there is still great hope in the use of these devices. It is expected that by the year 2014-2015, consoles will begin to gain strength and popularity in the market compared to PC games.
